What this tool does
Different countries use different plug shapes and different mains voltages. Plug into the wrong socket and at best nothing charges - at worst, a device built for 120 V can be destroyed instantly on a 230 V supply. This checker compares the plug types of your home country against the sockets of your destination and tells you, in one tap, whether you need a plug adapter (to change the shape) and whether you also need a voltage converter (to change the power).
How to use it
- 1. Select your home country - where your chargers and devices were bought.
- 2. Select your destination country.
- 3. Read the verdict: adapter needed or not, the plug type letters (A-O), and the voltage check.
- 4. Most phones, laptops, tablets and cameras are dual-voltage (100-240 V) - they only need a plug adapter. Hair dryers, straighteners and kettles often are not, so check the label on the device.
Plug adapter vs voltage converter - the difference
A plug adapter only changes the physical shape so your plug fits the foreign socket; it does nothing to the electricity. A voltage converter actually changes the voltage (e.g. 230 V down to 120 V). If your device says "INPUT: 100-240 V" on its label or charger, you only need an adapter. If it's single-voltage, you need a converter or you risk damaging it.
Frequently asked questions
Do I always need an adapter in Europe?
Mostly no, between continental European countries. The common "Europlug" (type C) fits the sockets in most of mainland Europe (types C, E, F and the Italian L). The UK and Ireland are the big exception - they use type G and you'll need an adapter coming from anywhere else.
Is a "universal adapter" worth it?
If you travel to several regions, a single universal adapter is convenient and usually cheaper than buying one per country. Remember it only changes plug shape, not voltage.
Will my phone charger work everywhere?
Almost always yes for the electricity - modern phone and laptop chargers are dual-voltage. You'll still need the right plug adapter for the socket shape.
Why is the airport the worst place to buy one?
It is easy to leave this to the last minute, but sorting your adapter before you travel means you are not hunting for one on arrival. Check your destination while you pack.
